About the role
As Chief Marketing Officer, you will shape how DRMP identifies opportunities, builds client relationships, and wins work. In engineering consulting, growth depends on understanding client priorities, positioning technical expertise, and bringing the right team to each pursuit. You will connect marketing, business development, market intelligence, and communications into a coordinated strategy that supports profitable growth and lasting client relationships.
This role combines strategic influence with hands-on leadership. You will partner with firm and operational leaders to decide where to compete, develop client and pursuit strategies, and coach technical professionals to communicate their value. You will also build the marketing and business development team’s capability and strengthen DRMP’s market presence. The opportunity is to shape both the growth strategy and the practices that turn it into results.
What you will lead:
Growth Strategy and Market Intelligence
- Partner with firm leadership to translate business goals into focused market, client, and growth plans. Recommend where to invest, expand, or redirect effort based on opportunity, competitive position, and delivery capability.
- Track client capital plans, funding programs, procurement activity, legislation, and competitors to identify opportunities early and build a qualified pursuit pipeline.
- Guide go/no-go decisions with a clear view of client relationships, competitive positioning, pursuit investment, and the firm’s ability to win and deliver.
- Use pipeline, win-rate, client-growth, and pursuit data to assess results, challenge assumptions, and adjust priorities with operational leaders.
Pursuit Strategy and Winning Work
- Lead strategy for major pursuits, from early positioning through RFQ/RFP responses and interviews. Shape differentiated win themes around client priorities and the firm’s technical strengths.
- Provide hands-on direction on critical proposals and qualifications packages, ensuring persuasive writing, clear value propositions, and consistent quality.
- Coach technical leaders and interview teams on client engagement, presentation strategy, messaging, team selection, and rehearsal.
- Lead win/loss debriefs and apply the findings to improve pursuit selection, proposal quality, interview performance, and future results.
Client Development and Account Growth
- Partner with client and technical leaders to develop key-account plans, deepen relationships, and identify needs before opportunities are formally advertised.
- Equip technical professionals to build client relationships, ask effective questions, and turn insight into practical account and pursuit actions.
- Identify opportunities to bring additional services and expertise to clients. Track continuing services contracts and subsequent task orders to help account teams convert awards into sustained work.
- Gather client feedback, assess relationship health, and work with account teams to address concerns and follow through on commitments.
Brand and Strategic Communications
- Translate complex technical expertise and project outcomes into a clear, differentiated market position and compelling client-facing content.
- Direct thought leadership, public relations, digital marketing, social media, awards, and industry events in support of priority markets and client relationships.
- Coach leaders and subject-matter experts to communicate credibly with clients and industry audiences through presentations, articles, and speaking opportunities.
- Partner with the Chief People Officer on internal messaging and change communications, helping leaders explain business priorities while supporting the CPO’s ownership of internal communications.
Team Leadership and Business Partnership
- Build, lead, and develop the marketing and business development teams, with clear priorities, ownership, resource allocation, and accountability for results.
- Create trusted partnerships with operational and technical leaders. Influence across offices and disciplines, challenge constructively, and align teams around shared growth priorities.
- Strengthen team knowledge of the firm’s services, clients, and commercial priorities. Develop the team’s ability to advise pursuit and account leaders.
- Improve pursuit processes, CRM discipline, and knowledge sharing so teams can work consistently, use client intelligence, and adopt more effective ways of winning work.
What you bring:
Qualifications and Experience
- 8+ years of progressive marketing, business development, or growth leadership experience in AEC, engineering consulting, environmental consulting, or a closely related technical professional services business. Comparable impact and scope will be considered.
- Experience leading a marketing or business development function, region, or business unit. Senior Directors and Vice Presidents ready for a broader remit are encouraged; a prior CMO title is not required.
- A measurable record of improving pursuit outcomes, client growth, or market position, with clear examples of personal ownership and partnership with technical leaders.
- Strong AEC pursuit expertise, including qualifications-based selection, RFQ/RFP strategy, proposal development, interview coaching, and pre-positioning. Able to connect marketing strategy with client development and winning work.
- Success leading and developing teams across offices, disciplines, or a matrixed organization, and coaching technical professionals in client engagement and business development.
- Strong commercial judgment, persuasive writing and presentation skills, and experience translating technical expertise into compelling positioning and communications.
- High emotional intelligence and credibility with senior leaders. Able to influence without direct authority, navigate resistance, and lead adoption of new processes while maintaining strong relationships.
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, communications, or a related field, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
