About the role

Translated into English from German by Korum. The employer's original wording is on their site.

The Opportunity

A consultancy of this size requires not only leaders to manage areas but also subject matter authorities, whose depth allows even the most challenging cases to be resolved. In the market, these individuals are often bound in pyramids where their impact ends at their own desk.

Vogel acquires independent consulting firms and develops them into the strongest address in their region. Several thousand medium-sized companies trust us with their tax, commercial, and strategic issues. Tax consulting is not just one business area among many, but the core. The path to advancement with us follows two equally important routes, and this role is at the top of the technical hierarchy.

You are the company-wide technical authority in your field: you handle the most challenging cases, shape methods and standards beyond your own desk, and empower professionals across the entire Tax line. This is done without disciplinary area management. You work closely with management and area owners on the most demanding topics.

Your Responsibilities

Technical Authority

  • Handle the most challenging cases and special topics in your area, the mandates where technical depth determines success or risk.

  • Be the company-wide escalation endpoint in your area, the person who is called for the really tough questions.

  • Keep Vogel in your area up to date with case law, legislation, and design practices, and translate this into concrete client consequences.

Methodology and Empowerment

  • Shape the technical standards and methods of your area company-wide: templates, audit schemes, consulting lines that the entire line uses.

  • Empower professionals across all locations through sparring, training, and technical leadership without disciplinary authority.

  • Be a technical sparring partner for area owners and management on the most demanding client and structural issues.

Brand and Market

  • Represent your area as a Vogel strength externally, through publications, lectures, and professional formats, and make us visible in the market for this depth.

  • Personally bind the strategically most important clients in your area to Vogel.

  • Resolve the demanding cross-departmental issues where your area is the key to opening doors.

Questions You Will Find Answers To

  • Which parts of your authority can be translated into an audit scheme, and which remain with you?

  • How do you maintain a company-wide technical standard without authority over the people who apply it?

  • What can AI already handle in your area today, and where is its use negligent?

How We Measure Success

  • After 6 months: You are established company-wide as the technical authority in your area and handle the most challenging cases. Initial company-wide methods are set, and the strategically most important clients in your area are personally connected to you.

  • After 12 months: Your area is visible externally as a Vogel strength, through publications, lectures, and mandates that come because of your authority. The technical line of your area bears your signature.

  • After 24 months: Your area is an independent contributor to reputation and results, and the standards of the group within it are fundamentally yours.

  • Where it leads: into the company-wide technical line of an entire subject area, equivalent to the owner responsibility of the leadership track. This is the IC career, determined by depth and impact, not by years of service.

What You Bring

  • You have passed the tax advisor examination and built a company-wide relevant technical authority in a special field.

  • You have represented your area externally through publications, lectures, a specialist advisor title, or cited positions.

  • You shape methods and standards beyond your own desk and empower other professionals.

  • You make complex matters tangible for clients, colleagues, and the professional public, and remain operationally competent in ongoing client work.

  • You work with AI as a natural lever and shape how your line uses it in technical depth.

  • You understand technical impact as equal to leadership, share knowledge instead of hoarding it, and set the highest standard in everything because mediocrity is not an option for you.

A Plus, Not a Requirement

  • A doctorate or habilitation, if associated with practical standing.

  • Experience in maintaining a technical line across multiple locations.

  • No canonical CV required: former partner candidates who prioritise technical impact over personnel apparatus; renowned specialist authors with a desire for mandates; specialists from a tax law boutique with a medium-sized wavelength. We evaluate based on contribution, not label; the stated range refers to the primary profile, and a different background starts at a different market price and converges after twelve months of proven performance to the role level.

What This Role Is, and What It Is Not

  • Equal, not a second league. Lead Expert stands on equal footing with the Director: same remuneration, same influence, same visibility.

  • Impact through method, not through personnel power. You shape standards and empower, rather than lead an apparatus you do not want.

  • Shape, not assist. Your area will become a Vogel strength. Being a lone wolf in a foreign structure is something else.

Why Vogel

  • Your depth gains reach. What you establish as a method is applied by professionals at all locations, and every acquisition expands this circle.

  • The tedious work is taken care of by the system. We automate declarative work ourselves, and our own annual financial statement with AI is the proof. What remains are the complex cases.

  • You want to decide: Your technical position is yours; no committee smooths it out. Vogel is hierarchical in decision-making, flat in communication, and autonomous in execution, without competing self-interests of a partnership.

  • Substance at your back. A profitable, growing company with established clients. Design, succession, and transactions are handled in-house, not by a third party.

FAQ

1. What is Vogel - and where do you work?

Vogel is one of the leading medium-sized consultancies in Germany - since 1959, owner-managed in the second generation, with its own capital - and builds the leading consulting platform for medium-sized businesses from this. We operate at three locations: Aalen as our established headquarters, Bopfingen in the core business, and Munich as a new hub. At all three, we are looking across functions - from tax consulting to advisory to the teams that build the foundation underneath.

2. How are the salary bands to be understood?

Deliberately broad - and stated at every point before you apply. We differentiate based on track record and market value, not based on qualifications: scarce, highly sought-after profiles at the upper end, less scarce at the lower. The stated range is not a negotiation margin but a profile scale - two people with similar experience can earn differently with us. What determines the upper end is the maturity level, not the number of years in the profession or negotiation skills.

3. How much - and how - is worked at Vogel?

Measured by what you move, not by hours. Honestly, however: those looking for 9-to-5 are not our first choice. We seek individuals who work intensively out of their own drive because the tasks are worth it. How you distribute your time is largely up to you. What we share: we work together in person and typically see each other daily in the office - culture, sparring, and the best ideas arise in daily proximity. We are not a remote company and do not have large home office policies; individual remote days are not a problem.

4. How does the application process work?

Slim, fast, transparent - and structured by profile. Typically, there are four steps: a written task where you respond to eight questions - AI is expressly allowed; we just ask for a brief self-disclosure about it; a half-hour conversation; a joint working session on a real problem from our daily work; and an on-site appointment with the team and a shared meal. How many steps it actually takes depends on the role: for internships and student jobs, the on-site appointment is omitted; for student jobs, a conversation suffices; for senior roles, a joint working afternoon is added. In advance, you can book a ten-minute call where only you ask questions. Typically, you hear from us within 48 hours after each step.

5. How does the variable remuneration work?

Quarterly linked to performance, qualitatively assessed. The scale increases with the level: up to 20% Associate, 27.5% Manager, 35% Senior Manager, 42.5% Director, 50% VP. The expected value with good performance - you meet the requirements, set your own accents, pass the keeper test - is around 50% of the maximum; the maximum bonus is not the norm. The focus is on a holistic assessment by your supervisor based on six criteria: Impact, Judgement, Communication, Execution, Growth, and Values.

6. How do I develop - what career paths are there?

Two active paths: the IC career (technical depth, expert career) through the stages of Expert, Senior, Lead, and Principal - and the management career (leadership, personnel responsibility) through Manager, Senior Manager, Director, and VP. Both are equally compensated, and neither must lead upwards: staying at a level and continuing to deepen there is equally valid with us. You choose the direction after onboarding, usually in years 1-3. Entry into the profession is not a special path but the early part of the same journey - from working student or intern to Associate, for the best without a new application process.

7. Team, culture, holiday?

The shared lunch is the daily anchor point - whoever is in the office eats together; expected, not controlled. Dinner is the same offer without any expectation. Both without personal contribution. In addition, social events and offsites occur regularly - not as a mandatory program, but because a good team also shares time outside of work.

Benefits are not the icing on the cake for us, but what makes intensity sustainable over years: exam support with a €25,000 qualification budget and three months of leave, 100% coverage of childcare, EGYM Wellpass, company pension scheme, job ticket with 90% subsidy, home office equipment and a device of your choice from our catalogue, a book a month from the Vogel canon - and AI tools without token limits and budget caps. Holiday: 28 days.
