About the role

Translated into English from Swedish by Korum. The employer's original wording is on their site.

We are looking for a design manager for the observational method and geotechnical structures for a consultancy assignment with Trafikverket within Västlänken in Gothenburg.

Place of work is Gothenburg. The position covers 40-80% of a full-time role.

The assignment involves close collaboration with the client, which places great demands on flexibility and collaborative ability.

The assignment

The assignment concerns design management for the observational method within Västlänken, Project Haga, sub-project Rosenlund. Västlänken is a railway link of approximately eight kilometres through central Gothenburg, of which just over six kilometres run in tunnel. In Haga, an underground station is being built approximately 25-35 metres below ground. The excavation work is carried out in soft clay within a support structure.

The consultant acts as design manager/OMG manager and shall lead, steer and coordinate the application of the observational method during the production phase. The role is responsible for technical coordination and decision processes so that the project's requirements for safety, time, quality and economy are met.

Duties

Lead the working group for the observational method and the technical decision process.

Plan and coordinate the work between client, designer and contractor.

Lead multidisciplinary work concerning deep excavations in soft clay.

Follow up measurement results and compare observations with forecasts and design assumptions.

Analyse deviations and assess the impact on structure, production and surroundings.

Ensure preparedness for alternative methods of execution, including scheduling, resources and materials supply.

Ensure that control points, action levels and decision paths according to the observational tree are followed.

Analyse the monitoring programme and ensure that decision support including measurement results, technical analyses, risk assessments and recommendations is prepared.

Lead the decision group when action levels are reached or conditions require reassessment.

Ensure that decisions, analyses, deviations and measures are documented and fed back into the project's planning, production and risk management.

Requirements (NOTE, mandatory)

Academic education in building/civil engineering of at least 180 credits, or alternatively other education and experience that Trafikverket considers equivalent.

At least 10 years of documented experience of leading multidisciplinary design or technical coordination in civil engineering projects, including geotechnics, structures, environment/impact on surroundings and production.

At least 10 years of documented experience from the production phase of civil engineering projects where technical matters have been handled in close collaboration between client, contractor and designer.

Experience from at least one civil engineering project of applying and leading risk-based methodology for excavations and/or geotechnical structures, for example the observational method according to Eurocode or equivalent.

Experience from at least one civil engineering project of leading technical decision processes during the construction phase based on monitoring programmes, measurement data, risk analyses or technical forecasts.

Experience from at least one civil engineering project of following up and analysing monitoring programmes covering deformations, groundwater, loads or other geotechnical control parameters.

Good communication skills in Swedish and English, spoken and written.

Good proficiency in Microsoft Office for analysing technical measurement data and technical documentation.

Civil engineering projects refers to projects with at least one of the following: concrete tunnel or concrete trough, major geotechnical structures, or excavations deeper than 10 metres in soft clay within a support structure.

Desirable

Analytical ability - ability to analyse measurement results, forecasts and technical documentation and to assess deviations and consequences.

Decision-making ability - ability to prepare well-founded decision support based on observations, measurement data, risks and economic and production conditions.

Holistic view - ability to weigh together geotechnical, structural, production, time-related and economic aspects.

Communicative ability - ability to clearly communicate technical assessments and recommendations to the project's various actors.

Integrity and confidence in expertise - ability to make technical assessments independently and justify recommended measures.

Other personal qualities

Very high technical competence.

Structured, analytical and goal-oriented.

Good collaborative and communication skills.

Ability to lead technical discussions across several disciplines.

Trust-building.

Proactive.

High integrity.

Good decision-making ability even under time pressure.
